JavaScript Hoisting

Hoisting is one of the most discussed concepts in JavaScript. It refers to how JavaScript’s interpreter moves declarations to the top of their scope during the compilation phase. Let’s break it down into simple terms and examples.

JavaScript Declarations are Hoisted

In JavaScript, variable and function declarations are moved to the top of their scope before the code executes. This means you can use variables and functions before declaring them. However, this can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior.

Example:

console.log(greeting); // undefined var greeting = “Hello, World!”; console.log(greeting); // Hello, World!

Explanation: In the code above, the declaration var greeting is hoisted to the top of the scope, but its initialization (“Hello, World!”) stays in place. This is why the first console.log shows undefined. The variable exists but hasn’t been assigned a value yet.

The let and const Keywords

With let and const (introduced in ES6), variables are not hoisted in the same way as var. Instead, they are in a “temporal dead zone” from the start of the block until the declaration is encountered. This makes the code less prone to errors and more predictable

Example:

console.log(message); // ReferenceError: Cannot access ‘message’ before initialization let message = “Learning JavaScript!”;

Explanation: The “temporal dead zone” prevents the use of the message variable before its declaration. This ensures better control and safety in your code.

JavaScript Initializations are Not Hoisted

Only the declarations are hoisted, not the initializations. This means that while the variable or function name is known to the interpreter, its value is not yet assigned.

Example:

console.log(number); // undefined var number = 10;

Here, the declaration var number is hoisted to the top, but the assignment number = 10 is not. This is why console.log(number) returns undefined.

Declare Your Variables at the Top!

A good practice to avoid confusion is to declare all your variables at the top of their scope. This improves code readability and reduces the chances of encountering hoisting-related bugs

Example:
